ABA practitioners maintain ongoing contact with relevant outcome data to make empirical-based decisions for individual programs. Numerous effective teaching methods have emerged from ABA, particularly for children with developmental disabilities, especially those with autism spectrum disorders. These applications, including natural environment strategies, discrete trial training, errorless learning, and verbal behavior analysis, are considered when developing personalized educational programs for children.
Natural Environment Strategies encompass various methodologies from Applied Behavior Analysis, such as "Incidental Teaching" and "Pivotal Response Training." These approaches address broad deficits like motivation, initiation, engagement, and attention to relevant cues, while also focusing on individual skill development. Designed to be child-directed, these promote language skills through naturally occurring opportunities throughout the day. Research indicates their effectiveness for many children with autism spectrum disorders and they serve as a valuable model for parent. No reinforcement is provided for responses that require physical prompting.
Errorless Learning is an instructional approach rooted in Applied Behavior Analysis, akin to Discrete Trial Training, but employs prompts in a most-to-least manner to ensure only correct responses are elicited. Prompted trials are succeeded by less prompted ortransfer” trials until the student shows mastery of the skill. Targeted reinforcement and momentum are implemented to address prompt-dependency and maintain the child's motivation during teaching sessions. This method is chosen when least-to-most teaching techniques are found to be ineffective for specific students.
Verbal Behavior Analysis (VBA) applies the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis to foster functional communication by creating motivating for language learning. Rooted in B.F. Skinner’s examination of verbal behavior, this method employs errorless learning and quick-transfer techniques within both natural settings and focused teaching sessions. Family-guided routines-based intervention is a systematic approach that guarantees active participation from all family members and service providers throughout the day, instead of relying only on individual therapy sessions. Routines consist of practical daily activities that provide opportunities to teach and practice vital skills in real-life contexts. These routines occur regularly, offering numerous chances for teaching and learning. Family-guided routines are structured activities designed to align with the interests and schedules of both the child and family, facilitating the selection of appropriate intervention targets and settings. The chosen routines aim to be predictable and enjoyable for both the child and caregiver, promoting ease of use increasing the likelihood of positive outcomes.
The Developmental, Individual Differences, Relationship-based (DIR) Approach, created by Drs. Stanley Greenspan Serena Wieder, emphasizes the child's social-interaction, focusing on key processes such as relating, attending, communicating, and thinking. These processes are nurtured through strategies called “ortime,” which involves engaging in reciprocal, child-led interactions that create “communication circles.” The aim offloortime” is to enhance the interactions between the child and adult by gradually expanding these circles of communication, laying the groundwork for further play development. In “floortime,” the adult participates in the child's play to foster enjoyable interactions and engagement. The child's actions are seen as intentional and purposeful, while the adult supports the child's lead to affirm their sense of identity. To motivate the child and encourage persistence and patience, preferred objects and activities are incorporated.-level skills and concepts are introduced through interactive play.
Relationship Development Intervention (RDI) is a cognitive-developmental program created Dr. Steven Gutstein. It emphasizes family empowerment by parents to serve as participant guides, enabling their children to respond more flexibly thoughtfully to new, challenging, and unpredictable situations. The RDI aims to enhance key aspects of "dynamic intelligence," such as declarative communication, referencing, self-regulation, episodic memory and flexible thinking. Parents learn to reevaluate their daily routines, organizing activities that offer safe yet challenging opportunities for exploration.
The Integrated Play Groups Model, created by Dr. Pamela Wolfberg at San Francisco State University, aims to improve peer relationships and social development in children with autism. This model involves three key steps: comprehensive assessment, the formation of play groups, and guided participation. The assessments evaluate the child's functioning level and preferences across various skills and play areas. Integrated playgroups are formed with a small number of children of varying abilities, designed to align with the child's strengths, interests, and. Play sessions are structured with routines and rituals that promote familiarity, predictability, and a sense of group identity, utilizing visual aids. Guided participation is facilitated through a-planned support system, where play guides help both novice and experienced players engage in enjoyable activities that foster social interaction, communication, and creativity. The play guides employ strategies such as monitoring play initiations, scaffolding activities, and offering social-communication and play support.
Sensory processing refers to the ability of the central nervous system to take in and respond to environmental input from all of the senses, including vision, hearing, touch, responses to movement and pressure on the body, taste, and smell. Self-regulation refers to the ability to maintain a calm, alert, and attentive state, which promotes involvement in learning experiences and interaction with others. Many people with autism are believed to demonstrate a typical reactions to sensory input. The self-stimulatory or perseverative behaviors exhibited by persons with autism are possibly attempts to seek out calming and organizing sensory input or to avoid disorganizing input from the environment. Specific activities are planned throughout the student’s day to promote better attention and engagement in learning.
Assistive technology encompasses any item, equipment, or product system—whether commercially available, modified, or customized—that enhances, maintains, or improves functional abilities of individuals with disabilities. Among the most prevalent assistive technology tools for young children with autism are those designed to support communication skillsLow Tech Augmentative Communication Aids Devices and strategies that enhance speech are commonly referred to as “augmentative communication” methods. Non-electronic materials, known as “low tech” augmentative communication aids, include picture symbol communication boards and books. For children who not yet literate, words and ideas are depicted through photographs or picture symbols alongside printed text. Communication occurs pointing to the relevant picture symbols or presenting them to a partner. High Tech Voice Output Communication Aids Devices that incorporate electronic components are classified as “high tech” augmentative communication tools. These devices enable an adult to program spoken messages corresponding to the picture symbols by the child. The child can convey messages by selecting the appropriate picture symbol, and the spoken output serves as a model, encouraging the child to articulate the word or phrase. Utilizing voice output communication devices allows children to communicate more effectively in group settings compared to low tech aids.
